Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has died at the age of 82. The news of his passing was confirmed on Sunday by his longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu, through a post on the social media platform X.
Shehu’s statement read:
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”
Buhari, a two-time leader of Nigeria first as a military ruler in the 1980s and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023 played a significant role in shaping modern Nigerian politics. He died in a private medical facility in London, where he had reportedly been receiving care for undisclosed health issues.
His passing has triggered a wave of condolence messages and reflections on his decades of service, both as a military officer and statesman. Buhari’s leadership, policies, and legacy continue to stir national debate and define a key era in Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
As Nigeria mourns, Muhammadu Buhari’s death at 82 marks the end of an era that spanned from military rule to democratic leadership.
